I suppose it had to happen sooner or later. My doctor warned me it would. My pemphigus has flared again, although it seems to be less severe than in times past.
Auto-immune diseases never go away. I’ll be undergoing some medical procedures to get it back into remission but that’s not the same as a cure. I can hardly blame my immune system: it thinks its protecting me. That’s its job.
Right now I’m swishing with a steroid mouth rinse to keep mouth blisters at bay. To recap, I have an auto-immune disease called pemphigus vulgaris. It’s a skin blistering disease that’s treated by dermatologists with a specialty in this condition. It really likes mucous membranes and typically starts in the mouth.
This is a food-centric month and I’m not a happy camper. I’ve had to restrict certain, high-acid foods like tomatoes and fruit. For some reason, I can’t tolerate chocolate, either. Good heavens, what else is there to eat? It’s just sad.
That being said, I’m not letting pemphigus shut me down again. I’m still going to the gym for regular exercise and I’m back to working on some writing projects with my writing coach. I’ll probably have to take some time off at some point but I’m determined to function as normally as I can until then. I’m enjoying Hanukkah with my husband and his family and am looking forward to Christmas, even with the food restrictions. I’ll manage.
In the meantime I’m going to be finishing my bread baking. I’ve been on a rye bread bender since November and have lots of really interesting recipes to test and – if they’re good – to give as holiday presents. I ordered some stollen a few weeks back and they’re marking time in my freezer.
So, take that, pemphigus! I’m eating chocolate. I don’t care what you say.
